How 3D printing works

A digital model is sliced into layers. Each layer is cured, fused, or extruded, then the next layer is added until the part is complete.

  1. Read the file

Upload STEP, STL, or 3MF. We read walls, volume, and support risk from the file.

  2. Match a process

Compare processes and materials on one quote — resin, nylon, or metal.

  3. Set finish and qty

Choose finish (sand, dye, vapor smooth, machine) and quantity before you order.

  4. Print and ship

We print, inspect, and ship. Delivery dates stay on the quote line.

What is 3D printing

3D printing 鈥?additive manufacturing 鈥?builds a physical part from a CAD or mesh file by placing thin layers of photopolymer, thermoplastic, or metal powder. The printer only adds material where the model needs it, so lattices, internal channels, and one-off shapes do not require dedicated tooling.

On AIHFABS the same upload can price resin, nylon, and metal processes. You choose the process for cosmetics, strength, or heat, then add dye, vapor smoothing, or machining on the quote instead of sending a second RFQ.

Main 3D printing technologies

Four processes cover most buyer searches: FDM, SLS, SLA, and MJF. Metal SLM, DLP, and LCD sit in the capabilities list below.

What this 3D printing service is good at 鈥?and where it is not

Use the plus column to decide if additive is the right first path. Use the limits column to know when CNC or molding will win later.

Strengths

  • Geometry without fixtures Internal ducts, lattices, and consolidated assemblies that would need many CNC setups.
  • Same-week prototypes Most plastic jobs leave the shop in hours to a few days after the file is approved.
  • Print only the lot you need Keep the model in a library and reprint when the revision changes 鈥?no obsolete stock.
  • Light, application-specific materials Resins for detail, nylons for clips and ducts, TPU for flex, metals when heat or load demands it.
  • One step from file to part No soft tooling for 1鈥?00 pieces. Design edits stay in the CAD, not in a mold shop.
  • Less subtractive scrap Material goes into the part and supports, not a leftover billet. Powder beds recycle unused powder.

Limits

  • Not every stock is printable Only resins, selected nylons, TPU, and a short metal list. Food-contact and some alloys need another process.
  • Build envelope A part larger than the chamber is split and joined. That adds time and a bond line.
  • Finishing is usually required Supports, powder cake, and layer texture need clean-up before a cosmetic or sealing face is ready.
  • Unit cost stays flatter Unlike injection molding, printing does not drop sharply at thousands of pieces.
  • Layered structure FDM in particular is anisotropic. Load paths should follow the layers or move to SLS, MJF, or CNC.
  • Tolerance is process-specific Typical plastic holds about 卤0.2鈥?.3 mm. Critical bores still want machining after print.

3D printing FAQ

Which 3D printing process should I choose?

Match the job: SLA, DLP, or LCD for smooth visuals; SLS or MJF for durable nylon; FDM for inexpensive fixtures; SLM for metal. Each child page lists materials and limits.

How accurate is online 3D printing?

Typical plastic parts hold about ±0.2–0.3 mm; metal SLM is tighter after machining. Exact capability is on each process page and confirmed on the quote.

Can I mix 3D printing and CNC?

Yes. Many orders print a near-net shape, then machine critical faces. Start here, then open SLM or the CNC landing if you need subtractive work.

What files do you need?

STEP is best for metals and CNC-adjacent jobs; STL or 3MF is fine for plastics. One upload prices every process you select.

Engineering guide to custom 3D printed parts

Industrial 3D printing builds a part layer by layer, but the choice of resin, powder or filament changes its mechanical behavior, surface and post-processing route. Select for the application rather than the technology name. Use the process comparison below to narrow the route, then review the linked process guide for the part geometry.

Process selection: application, material and design constraints
Process and materialsUseful applicationsEngineering tradeoff
SLA / DLP / LCD · photopolymer resinsDetailed visual models, masters and fit-check partsSupport contact and post-curing affect the finished part. Check heat, UV exposure and long-term load requirements for the selected resin.
SLS · nylon and supported flexible gradesClips, ducts, housings and functional prototypesPowder supports the build, but cavities still need cleaning access. Surface texture and thin features affect sealing and assembly.
MJF · supported nylon gradesFunctional polymer parts and repeated small batchesPacking and orientation influence build planning. Confirm grade, color, finish and critical interfaces rather than assuming all nylon parts behave alike.
FDM · thermoplastic filamentConcept models, fixtures and larger practical prototypesLayer direction and toolpath affect strength. Support-facing surfaces may differ from the top and side walls.
SLM · metal powder alloysComplex metal brackets, passages and consolidated assembliesResidual stress, support removal and finishing need planning. Precision bores or sealing faces may need secondary machining.

Design for orientation, supports and cleaning

Show the load direction, cosmetic face and mating interfaces before the build orientation is finalized. Avoid trapped powder or resin inside closed cavities. Provide accessible drains and cleaning paths for hollow parts, allow for support removal and identify thin features that need special review. A minimum wall value is meaningful only with its material, unsupported span and orientation.

Choose materials by service conditions

Check stiffness, impact behavior, sustained temperature, moisture exposure and the environment in which the part will be used. PA12, PA11, TPU, engineering resins and metal alloys solve different problems. Use the exact grade datasheet; a familiar trade name or an ABS-like label is not proof of equivalence to another manufacturing material.

Separate build accuracy from assembly fit

Whole-part dimensional accuracy, local feature resolution and a working clearance are different specifications. Holes, mating pins and thin walls can respond differently to orientation and finishing. Mark critical dimensions on a drawing and state the mating component or required fit. Confirm the accepted tolerance and measurement condition in the quote.

Plan post-processing before printing

Cleaning, curing or depowdering is part of the manufacturing route. Dyeing, painting, polishing, smoothing and metal machining add different effects to appearance and dimensions. Specify color, texture, visible surfaces, masking and fit-critical features. Coatings and smoothing can change a clearance; metal finishing may require machining stock.

Inspection and production release

Agree the material grade, file revision, orientation-sensitive requirements and finished-part dimensions before production. For a first run, use a sample to evaluate fit, surface and handling. Ask which dimensional or material documentation can be supplied for the order. Safety-critical or regulated applications require their own application validation and agreed acceptance plan.
