Milling, turning, routing, 5-axis, precision, large-part, and Swiss machining — quoted online from your CAD.
Use this landing to choose the CNC path that matches your geometry. Each child page covers machines, materials, tolerances, and design notes.
A cutter removes stock from plate or bar along a programmed toolpath until the remaining metal or plastic matches the CAD.
Upload STEP (preferred) with critical dimensions called out on the drawing or in the file.
Pick milling, turning, 5-axis, Swiss, or large-part based on the geometry.
Choose alloy, finish, and inspection level on the quote.
We machine, inspect, and ship. Dates and extras stay on the quote line.
CNC machining is subtractive manufacturing. Mills, lathes, and routers cut production alloys and engineering plastics from known stock. The process holds threads, bores, and mating faces that most as-printed parts cannot hold without a secondary operation.
On AIHFABS you upload STEP (preferred) once. The quote maps milling, turning, 5-axis, Swiss, routing, or large-part work to the same geometry, then adds anodize, blast, or inspection on that ticket.
Most jobs start on milling or turning. 5-axis and Swiss cover compound angles and small, slender parts. Routing and large-part pages sit in the list below.

Turning for revolved parts from bar; milling for prismatic parts from plate. Use 5-axis when undercuts or compound angles would take too many setups.
Conventional CNC is typically ±0.05–0.10 mm; precision and Swiss pages list tighter grades. Drawing callouts override typical values.
Yes. Aluminum and steels are the volume work; POM, nylon, and PEEK are common plastics. Materials are listed on each process page.
Stock volume, machine time, setups, and finish drive the total. Simple prototypes often start around $35–$80; 5-axis and large parts are quoted to the file.

CNC machining removes material from solid stock. Geometry, tool access and workholding determine whether a part is best milled, turned or made with multiple operations. Send the model with a drawing so our manufacturing team can review the critical features, material condition, surface requirements and inspection basis together.
| Manufacturing route | Typical geometry | Review before quoting |
|---|---|---|
| CNC milling | Prismatic housings, pockets, brackets and mounting plates | Internal corner radii, pocket depth, thin walls, tool reach and the number of setups. |
| CNC turning | Shafts, bushings, sleeves and rotational components | Diameter-to-length relationship, workholding, concentric features, threads and cross-drilled operations. |
| 5-axis machining | Multi-face parts, angled features and complex contours | Tool and fixture clearance; fewer setups do not automatically make every feature accessible. |
| Swiss machining | Slender turned parts and small repeated components | Stock diameter, length, burr control and how the part is supported during cutting. |
| Routing / large-part machining | Panels, sheet-based parts and large structures | Material stability, support area, stock availability, handling and transport. |
Aluminum 6061 and 7075 differ in strength, corrosion behavior and finishing response. Stainless steel grades balance corrosion resistance, strength and machinability differently. POM, nylon, PC and other engineering plastics need attention to moisture, temperature and dimensional stability. Identify the exact grade and condition; approve any proposed substitute before production.
Rotating end mills leave internal radii. Use accessible tool paths, allow sensible corner radii and avoid deep narrow pockets where tool deflection becomes difficult to control. Thin walls can move during cutting or after unclamping. Identify the faces that may be used for workholding and discuss an alternative split or assembly if a feature cannot be reached.
Use a drawing to define datum references, fits, geometric controls, thread specifications and surface texture. Tighten only the dimensions that control assembly or performance. A general tolerance does not replace a specific fit, flatness or positional requirement. Confirm the tolerance standard and inspection method before manufacturing; do not infer a guaranteed capability from an example value.
Anodizing, plating and coatings can alter fit and surface behavior. State whether dimensions apply before or after finish, which threads and bores need masking, and which faces are cosmetic. Define acceptable tool marks or specify a texture requirement on the drawing. Deburring requirements matter on sealing edges, small cross-holes and assembled components.
Identify critical-to-quality dimensions and request the inspection documentation needed for the project. Material traceability, dimensional reports and first-article approval must be agreed in the quote. Keep the approved revision, material condition and finishing specification with repeat orders so a reorder does not silently change the acceptance criteria.
Upload CAD once. Compare milling, turning, 5-axis, and Swiss options before you place the order.
