Usinage CNC

Large Part CNC Machining

Dedicated large-format CNC for parts typically over 1 m and 1 ton — aerospace, energy, shipbuilding, and heavy equipment.

Large Part CNC Machining is a professional manufacturing service that uses large-scale, dedicated CNC machine tools to cut workpieces that exceed the size or weight capacity of conventional equipment. Typical parts are longer than 1 meter and heavier than 1 ton, and are widely used in aerospace, energy, shipbuilding, and mining machinery.

Large CNC CNC machining on AIHFABS

What is large-part CNC machining?

Large-part CNC is for work that does not fit a standard vise: frames, spars, hubs, and plates that are often longer than a meter and heavier than a ton. Gantry mills, large HMCs, and big lathes establish datums on the floor, not on a benchtop.

AIHFABS quotes this route when logistics, stress relief, and span accuracy matter as much as the toolpath. If the part is small and tight, use milling, turning, or precision machining instead.

Large-part capabilities

Size, weight, and crane access are reviewed before a rate is promised.

Typical size

Often > 1 m length and > 1 ton weight

Typical tolerance

Around ±0.025 mm on critical features; large spans project-dependent

Machine examples

Gantry mills, large HMC/VMC, large lathes, universal turn-mill

Handling

Gantry crane / modular transport as required

Lead time

Quoted per project (fixturing and logistics driven)

Large-part surface finishes

Most faces stay as-machined. Paint, blast, or local polish is applied where the drawing asks.

Large CNC machined structure

As machined (large face)

Gantry or HMC texture on structural faces. Cosmetic plates can get a finer pass.

Large machined weldment or plate

Blast or prime

Bead or grit blast plus primer or paint on frames that leave the shop as assemblies.

Precision pad on a large CNC part

Local precision faces

Pads, bores, and datums finished tighter than the rest of the span.

How we run large-part jobs

Large-format CNC machining of an oversized metal component
  1. 1

    Step 1

Part envelope, weight, and material are reviewed against large-travel machine capacity.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Heavy-duty fixturing, thermal control, and stress-relief steps stabilize the workpiece.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Gantry, HMC/VMC, or large lathe/turn-mill operations establish datums and critical features.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Floor CMM, laser tracker, or large 3D scanning verifies spans and hole patterns.

Envelope, weight, and lift points are confirmed before fixturing. Stress relief is scheduled when the stock or the weldment needs it.

Floor CMM, laser tracker, or large-area scan verifies hole patterns and long datums. Tight numbers should sit on local pads, not on a full 2 m face.

Advantages and Trade-offs

Advantages

  • BOM consolidation into monolithic machined parts
  • Stronger structural integrity without weld/bolt weak points
  • Shorter lead time by cutting multi-part assembly loops
  • High precision at scale — around ±0.025 mm when specified

Trade-offs

  • Lead time follows fixturing and freight, not a 3-day prototype cell.
  • Holding ±0.025 mm across a full span is often unrealistic; localize the tight zones.
  • Deep cavities on a gantry still cost tool time and risk deflection.

Design guidelines for large CNC

Design for a crane and a long table, not for a 3-axis vise.

Feature Recommended practice
Cavities Reduce deep pockets and undercuts that force long tools on a gantry.
Span tolerance About ±0.1 mm/m is more honest on large travels than a blanket ±0.02 mm.
Local pads Put tight holes and faces on machined pads, not on as-welded skin.
Lift & ship Show lift points and packing limits early; they change the quote.

Large-part CNC FAQ

How big is “large” on this page?

Typical jobs are over 1 m in a major length and can exceed 1 ton. Smaller tight parts should use standard or precision milling.

What tolerance can a gantry hold?

Around ±0.025 mm on local critical features. Long spans are quoted to the drawing and the machine travel.

Do you handle shipping of oversized parts?

Yes — gantry crane, modular packing, and freight are part of the project quote.

Can you machine a welded fabrication?

Yes, after stress relief and a datum strategy. Send the weldment model plus the finish-machine drawing.

Is instant quote enough?

Upload still starts the file. Oversized work is often confirmed manually because fixtures and logistics move the number.

Large Part CNC Machining — engineering review before production

Use these process-specific checks when preparing your model, drawing and quote request. The confirmed quotation and approved drawing define the requirements for your part.

Machining envelope versus usable access

A machine envelope alone does not prove a large part can be completed. Stock, fixtures, tool reach, handling and access to each face also matter. Share the full model, mass estimate and required datum relationships for a project review.

Residual stress, support and transport

Removing substantial stock can release stress and move the part. Thin sections need support during machining and measurement. Specify lifting provisions, finished surfaces to protect and transport restrictions before the manufacturing plan is finalized.

Acceptance checklist

Confirm stock condition, setup sequence, agreed measurement support, flatness or alignment requirements and protective packaging. Establish which dimensions will be inspected on-machine or by a separate method.
