Online CNC machining service

How CNC machining works

A cutter removes stock from plate or bar along a programmed toolpath until the remaining metal or plastic matches the CAD.

  1. Read the CAD

Upload STEP (preferred) with critical dimensions called out on the drawing or in the file.

  2. Pick the machine path

Pick milling, turning, 5-axis, Swiss, or large-part based on the geometry.

  3. Set alloy and finish

Choose alloy, finish, and inspection level on the quote.

  4. Machine and inspect

We machine, inspect, and ship. Dates and extras stay on the quote line.

What is CNC machining

CNC machining is subtractive manufacturing. Mills, lathes, and routers cut production alloys and engineering plastics from known stock. The process holds threads, bores, and mating faces that most as-printed parts cannot hold without a secondary operation.

On AIHFABS you upload STEP (preferred) once. The quote maps milling, turning, 5-axis, Swiss, routing, or large-part work to the same geometry, then adds anodize, blast, or inspection on that ticket.

Main CNC technologies

Most jobs start on milling or turning. 5-axis and Swiss cover compound angles and small, slender parts. Routing and large-part pages sit in the list below.

CNC Turning Services

CNC Turning Services

CNC Turning Services use computer numerical control lathes to remove material while the workpiece rotates at high speed and the cutting tool feeds along a set path.

Full process details

What this CNC service is good at — and where it is not

Choose CNC when the drawing wants stock properties and repeatable faces. Move to 3D printing when the shape is expensive to fixture.

Strengths

  • Drawing-level tolerances Typical ±0.05–0.10 mm; precision and Swiss pages list tighter grades.
  • Real production alloys Aluminum, steels, stainless, titanium, and plastics such as POM, PEEK, and PC from plate or bar.
  • Repeatable cosmetic faces Machined texture plus standard finishes: anodize, blast, passivate, paint.
  • Threads and fits in one setup Tapped holes, bearing bores, and sealing grooves without a print-then-machine hop for many jobs.
  • Better economics as quantity grows Once fixtures exist, extra pieces cost machine time, not a full additive rebuild.
  • Homogeneous stock No layer lines. Strength follows the alloy, not the build orientation.

Limits

  • Geometry has a cost Deep pockets, internal lattices, and undercuts need extra setups or 5-axis time.
  • Stock waste You pay for the billet, including the chips. Hollow or organic shapes are usually cheaper to print.
  • Lead time follows setups A simple 2.5-axis plate can be fast; a five-face titanium part waits on programming and fixtures.
  • Thin walls and deep ribs Chatter and tool reach set a floor that powder-bed plastics do not have.
  • One-off cosmetics can cost more A single visual model is often faster and cheaper in SLA than in a mill.
  • Very large organic shapes Routing and large-part CNC exist, but they are not a substitute for every printed sculpture.

CNC machining FAQ

Should I choose milling or turning?

Turning for revolved parts from bar; milling for prismatic parts from plate. Use 5-axis when undercuts or compound angles would take too many setups.

What tolerances can you hold?

Conventional CNC is typically ±0.05–0.10 mm; precision and Swiss pages list tighter grades. Drawing callouts override typical values.

Do you machine plastics and metals?

Yes. Aluminum and steels are the volume work; POM, nylon, and PEEK are common plastics. Materials are listed on each process page.

How is CNC priced online?

Stock volume, machine time, setups, and finish drive the total. Simple prototypes often start around $35–$80; 5-axis and large parts are quoted to the file.
