3D Printing in Art and Design

We have been helping many artists to fulfill 3D printed art, sculptures, and miniatures, inspiring innovation and creativity. 3D printing can create intricate, detailed, unique, and stunning pieces for the art and design industry. Artists and designers can quickly and accurately bring their concepts to life with 3D printing, saving time and costs.

Studios send organic shells, lattices, and master patterns that need a smooth face before paint or silicone. SLA and high-detail resin handle the surface. SLS nylon handles the piece that has to be handled.

What studios send us

The file is usually a sculpture, a lighting form, or a master for silicone. Resolution and surface matter more than tensile numbers. We print in SLA or SLS, then sand, vapor-smooth, or prime so the next finish is yours.

If the piece is a functional housing that also has to look designed, we treat it as a consumer-goods job: nylon or MJF for the body, resin only where the face is on show.

Typical art and design parts

Display first. Masters second. Functional skins when the design is also a product.

Sculptural shells

Voronoi and organic walls that would be weeks in a mill. Resin for show, nylon if it will be handled.

Master patterns

Smooth SLA masters for silicone, vac-form, or a paint study.

Lighting and display

Translucent or painted forms for fixtures and exhibitions.

Limited-run objects

A short edition without committing to a mold.

From prototype development to production support

Plan each stage around the part’s function, material and inspection requirements—from the first design review to a repeatable batch.

  1. Share the intent

Display, master, or handled object. That choice sets resin versus nylon.

  2. Print at the right resolution

SLA for faces and edges. SLS when the lattice has to survive shipping.

  3. Finish for the next step

Sand, prime, vapor-smooth, or leave as-printed if the texture is the point.

  4. Pack for the show or the shop

Fragile shells ship with more protection than a nylon clip.

Manufacturing capabilities and material options

Match the process, material and finish to the part’s geometry and operating conditions. Share your requirements so the quotation can include the necessary secondary operations.

Materials that show up on studio quotes

Clear, tough, and standard resins for faces. PA12 when the object is used.

SLA resins

Standard, tough, and clear grades for display and masters.

SLS nylons

PA12 for lattices and handled editions.

Finishing

Paint, dye, and polish options after the print.

Design, material and inspection considerations

Sculptures and detailed presentation models

Resin printing suits small details and surface evaluation; larger work may need split sections with locating features. Identify the viewing distance, visible seams, delicate projections and acceptable support-removal marks.

Color, texture and final appearance

Supply a color reference and define whether the finish should be matte, gloss, metallic or translucent. Review a finish sample when appearance is critical, since substrate color, coating thickness and lighting all affect the result.

Installation and transport

Large pieces need a mounting and packing plan as well as a model. Show fixing points, access for assembly, section joints and the orientation in which the piece will be displayed; fragile details may need separate protective packaging.

Art and design FAQ

Can you print a hollow sculpture?

Yes, with drain holes and a wall thickness we can stand up. We will flag thin walls before we start.

Will the surface take paint?

SLA plus sanding and primer is the usual path. Say the paint system on the quote so we stop at the right grit.

Do you keep the file private?

Studio files follow the same vault rules as every other CAD upload. See the guarantee page for how we handle them.

Upload the model and say whether it is for display, handling, or a mold. We will pick resin or nylon from that.
