SLA 3D Printing (Stereolithography)

Ultra-smooth resin parts with fine feature resolution.

Stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid photopolymer with a precision UV laser, building parts layer by layer. SLA excels when surface quality, small features, and dimensional accuracy matter more than rugged thermoplastic performance.

Resin

How it works

  1. The model is sliced and oriented to minimize support contact on cosmetic surfaces.
  2. A laser draws each layer on the resin surface, curing it to the previous layer.
  3. Supports stabilize islands and overhangs during the build.
  4. Parts are washed, post-cured, and supports removed before optional clear coat or painting.

Key advantages

  • Excellent surface smoothness and sharp detail for show models and fit checks
  • Wide resin palette: tough, flexible, high-temp, castable, and transparent grades
  • Stable dimensions for mating interfaces and presentation-quality prototypes
  • Efficient for small, intricate geometries

Typical applications

  • Concept models and design verification before tooling investment
  • Master patterns for silicone molding or investment casting workflows
  • Dental and medical visualization models (material grade dependent)
  • Consumer product enclosures and ergonomic studies

Materials

Standard & tough resins High-temperature resins Clear & translucent resins Flexible & rubber-like resins Castable resins for molding

Specifications

1 From 48 hours for standard resin jobs
2 ±0.2 mm on well-supported features
3 Platform up to 800 × 800 × 550 mm (job dependent)
4 Fine layers for smooth curvature; balanced modes for speed
5 Required; contact points can be placed on non-cosmetic faces

Design tips

  • Keep wall thickness above vendor minimums to avoid brittle thin shells.
  • Drain holes help resin flow on hollow cosmetic parts.
  • Mark cosmetic surfaces in drawings so supports can be hidden on B-side geometry.
